The 2nd round of the World Baseball Classic started last night as Israel took on its first proven power of the international baseball world in Cuba. Jason Marquis got the start for Israel, while Enteza was tapped for Cuba. Alfredo Despaigne opened up the scoring for Cuba with a solo shot in the 2nd inning. From there on out, the scoring was all Israel. Ryan Lavarnway roped a double down the left field line, almost knocking down the umpire. The line drive scored Ike Davis to tie the game at 1. After being quiet for most of the first round, Zach Borenstein singled to give Israel what proved to be its winning run. Blake Gailen ripped a double to put the score at 3-1. In the top of the 8th, Cuba threatened to come back. With two outs, the Cubans loaded the bases. However, Ed Saavedra hit a grounder to third base, ending the rally. After Blake Gailen bunted home another run, Cuba went down silently. Israel will hope to follow the win up with another against the Netherlands. Cuba will look to rebound against powerhouse Japan.
