Spring Training gives MLB GM’s the chance to upgrade their rosters for the upcoming seasons, and while many teams wait for the season to begin to do their homework, some GM’s like to wait until the final week of the spring to fill in the missing pieces to their lineup, whether it’s a free agent signing, or a trade acquisition. Here are some trade predictions that could happen towards the end of Spring Training
Astros get: C Bryan Holaday
Tigers get: RHP Josh Turley
WHY: The Astros recently lost Max Stassi for a few weeks, and Holaday (who is out of options) could be a nice addition for Houston while Stassi recovers.
Braves get: LHP Brad Hand
Marlins get: RHP Wes Parsons
WHY: The Braves recently lost Andrew McKirahan for 2016 to TJ Surgery, and Ian Krol has not performed well this spring. The only lefty that’s reliable in Braves camp is Alex Torres, and Brad Hand could pitch along side him.
Phillies get: OF Sam Fuld
Athletics get: C Deivi Grullon, cash considerations
WHY: The Phillies could use an outfielder after the loss of Aaron Altherr for most of the season, and with the Athletics’ outfield surplus, Sam Fuld could be the odd man out.
Angels get: C Derek Norris
Padres get: RHP Grayson Long, 3B Kaleb Cowart
WHY: The Angels need a catcher, without a doubt, to contend in the AL West. And with the tandem of Derek Norris/Carlos Perez, I feel like that would propel them to the top of the West again. Despite adding Geovany Soto in the off season, that won’t be enough, so with this trade….
Rangers get: C Geovany Soto
Angels get: PTBNL
WHY: The Rangers need a catcher just like the Angels do. They have done their due diligence on Jonathan Lucroy, but the price seems to be way to steep early this season. Soto is very familiar with the Rangers organization, playing for the team from July 2012 to August 2014.
Brewers get: OF Oswaldo Arcia
Twins get: RHP Jacob Barnes
WHY: The Brewers need a corner outfielder, and Arcia fits the bill. Arcia hit 20 home runs two seasons ago, and just seems too talented to sit on the bench in Minnesota. He will be paired up with his brother as well in Milwaukee.
Red Sox get: RHP James Shields
Padres get: RHP Travis Lakins, OF Luis Alexander Basabe
WHY: The Red Sox have been in talks with the Padres about Shields (same with Baltimore), and the Red Sox rotation itself has some question marks surrounding it. Adding Shields would be a huge step forward for Boston.
