Ottawa Senators: Trade Deadline Review

I’m not gonna lie. I really strongly dislike Alexandre Burrows. I definitely don’t like the move trading Dahlen away. But, as much as I dislike (I’m gonna try and stay away from the word “hate”) Burrows, I think that Sens fans need to just give the guy a chance. Including me.

Burrows is here for a reason and he’s already doing his job. He’s making people mad, he gets the other opponent aggravated.

Another reason why he’s here is because he’s a great playoff player. He went to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2010-11. He has 34 points in 70 playoff games and he had 2 points in 3 games in the 2014-15 Playoffs. He’s also on pace for his best season since 2014-15 and could even total better stats than that season. He currently has 9 goals and 11 assists in 55 games. Last year he played 79 games and totaled 9 goals and 22 points. And all those stats are from a struggling Vancouver Canucks squad. Now he’s playing in Ottawa, and according to dailyfaceoff.com, they have him playing on the first line with Turris and Hoffman.

Burrows could really kill it here in Ottawa. And remember Sens fans, nobody was happy with the Phaneuf trade who’s probably gonna have his best season since his 2011-12 season with the Maple Leafs. We have to give the guy a chance.

Ottawa also acquired Viktor Stalberg.

Stalberg is a fast player, he’s also got Stanley Cup experience like Burrows. However he isn’t the best playoff player (2 goals, 9 points in 43 games) but Ottawa only had to give up a 3rd Rounder so that’s not too bad for a 4th Line player.

Also remember that Stalberg is coming from Carolina. He had 9 goals, 11 assists and 20 points in 75 games with the Rangers last season and he currently has 9 goals and 12 points in 57 games with Carolina. So maybe he can come to Ottawa, playing with Wingels and Kelly or Neil (whatever the 4th line will look like) and play awesome hockey for the Sens.

The final acquisition came from a late trade to Calgary. Jyrki Jokipakka.

Jokipakka was a player that I was hoping would find his way into the Spezza trade a few years back. Sadly, he wasn’t and we settled with Alex Chiasson, Tobias Lindberg, and Nick Paul.

Jyrki will likely be the 7th D on the Sens roster. He’ll probably be switching with Borowiecki and find himself in the lineup when Boucher decides to play 11 forwards, 7 defense. Either that or Claesson will keep the 7th spot and Jokipakka will just be sent down. But I’d like to see Jokipakka play some games here in Ottawa first.

I also think Jokipakka was a steal. We got rid of Curtis Lazar and Mike Kostka for Jokipakka and a 2017 2nd Rounder. That’s a really good trade.

So Sens fans, the wrap up here is, just wait a few games to see how the new guys do, Ottawa will hopefully make the playoffs and depending on how they do in the playoffs, maybe they’ll target Matt Duchene (again).

The Senators play the Avalanche tonight, all we do now is wait for Boucher to release his lineups and we’ll get to see who everyone’s linemates are and how they do.

Oh and Sens fans, just remember, trust the system.
