The Washington Nationals have acquired All-Star Closer Mark Melancon from the Pirates in exchange for LHP Felipe Rivero and LHP Taylor Hearn. This move truly solidifies the Nationals bullpen as they were looking for a closer with Papelbon falling apart recently. The Pirates also emerge as sellers. Moving Melancon marks the first move of the Pirates giving up on 2016, receiving 2 prospects in exchange. Rivero, 25, has a 4.53 ERA in 47 appearances out of the bullpen this season. The Pirates are hoping he will return to 2015 form in Pittsburg, as he had a 2.79 ERA in 49 appearances. Hearn, 21, is a very hard throwing lefty. He is a starter, but has shown a willingness to come out of the pen. If Hearn can fine tune his control, he should have a very bright career in Pittsburg. The Nationals recieve one of the best closers in baseball in Melancon. He has 30 saves in 33 opportunities this year with a 1.51 ERA. If he can pitch anything like that for Washington, the Nationals will have truly solidified a deep ticket for October.
