Gophers Upset Washington State, Win Holiday Bowl

The Minnesota Gophers upset the Washington St. Cougars 17-12 last night in the Holiday Bowl. The win pushes the Minnesota’s record to 9-4, making this season the first time the Gophers have won nine games since 2003. With the loss, the Cougars finished the season with a record of 8-5. The game featured a low scoring first half, with the score being 6-3 going into the third quarter. Minnesota was able to score a late third quarter touchdown to give the Gophers their first lead of the day. After that, there was no scoring until Rodney Smith had an eight yard run with just over two minutes left in the game, a touchdown that proved to be the knockout punch. Washington State marched down the field and scored a touchdown to make the score 17-12, but exhausted the clock in doing so, giving Minnesota the victory.
