The game featured a low scoring first half, with the score being 6-3 going into the third quarter. Minnesota was able to score a late third quarter touchdown to give the Gophers their first lead of the day. After that, there was no scoring until Rodney Smith had an eight yard run with just over two minutes left in the game, a touchdown that proved to be the knockout punch. Washington State marched down the field and scored a touchdown to make the score 17-12, but exhausted the clock in doing so, giving Minnesota the victory.
